Tho wreckage on the railway line has been cleared and all is safe for traffic again. In the case of Hayaon, charged with arson, the Magistrate said there was a doubt as to the man’s sanity, and he refused bail. The managers of the New Zealand Klondike Gold Syndicate have decided that as the applications for shares are less than .£ISOO, the syndicate bo wound up and the full amount of application money be returned. Captain Broun, Government Entomologist, has discovered two specimens of winged parasitic fly that seems likely to be of great service in attacking the “ grass grub” (odontria). The perfect fly was reared on the first day of the year. Two or three months were spent before that in experimental work. Tho announcement will be hailed with pleasure by farmers throughout the colony, particularly in the Middle Island. Tho losses through destruction of grass have been enormous, whilst many fruit-growers and gardeners have also suffered pretty heavily by the odontria beetle and its larva.
Moran’s clothing factory was burglarised on Monday night and a quantity of clothing stolen. The police have arrested James Troy, alias Thomson, and Robert Levett, alias Lovett, alias Moore, oh the charge of breaking find entering and stealing 14 pairs of trousers, valued at £7, and four serge coats valued at J 33Dunedin, January 6,
At the Police Court, Mr P. J, Bellett, licensee of a hotel at St. Kiida, was fined 20s and costs for selling liquor at 4 a.m., and the conviction was ordered to be endorsed on hjs license. The licensee and his servant swore that the hour was after 6 a.m, Bellett was also fined 41 and costs for assault, and a man named Price was fined 40s for procuring drink for a prohibited person. Manufacturers are to be invited to send to the annual meeting ot the Canterbury Industrial Association on the 27th inst, particulars and samples of tho products of any new industry started during the year. The ‘ committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association has decided not to hold a winter show this year.
