EXPLOSIVES.
TO THE EDITOR. . . Sib, —Almost weekly we see reports of fatal accidents arising through defective firing of charges in blasting operations. May I ask your aid in bringing this matter to the notice of a Government .whose desire is to aid and safeguard the workers ? If electricity is used for the purpose'of firing charges, the risk of accident .is reduced to a practical impossibility for, if the charge does not fir© when the current is applied, it will not fire afterwards; and if the wires aro taken off the exploding machine, the' charge and detonator may be examined with perfect safety. An ap? paratus for this work and the necessary twin wire and 100 detonators could be obtained in London for about «Sls ; the detonators probably costing la Od each. The exploder should be good for 20 years with ordinary care. .The. necessary knowledge to enable anyone ; to successfully fire charges electrically could be imparted in 10 minutes.—l am, &o. - - Wellington, 16th October, 1897. ‘ j [A number of letters are tn type. They will appear to-morrow."]
