WELLINGTON BOWING CLUB. A tinieiy change In the wind enabled the Wellington Rowing club to get off tho Burns Four on Saturday afternoon along the southerly course. This competition was inaugurated os a compliment to Ur A. M. Burns, who was for so many years hon seoretary of the club, and it will be an annual ©vent. Rost entries were received, and tna whole competition was rowed off during the afternoon in six heats. In the first round J. Mead (bow), A. Minogno (2). A. Mo Alpine (3). J. Burke (stroke), Dixon (cox), beat A. Purdie (bow), C. E. Cooke (2), F. Smith (3), C. Maudesley (stroke), Bush (cox); F. Elbsqn (bow), W. Book (2), W. Spargo (3), A. Hill i trqk ), Bush (cos) defeated A. Robertsni (o iw): Charters (2), O. Graham (3), J. R. (stroke), Dixon (cox) ; M. Horan (bow), W.< Nidd (2), W. Cuthbertson : T. Spencer (stroke). Bash (oox) won from (bow), G. Hinsen (2), J. Macdonald (3), F. Panning (stroke), Dixon c>x). In eaoa case the winning crew had a aomewhipj victory. For the second round Spencer s crew drew the bye, and Hill r icpd B irK •, tu) former winning after a ha?d race by aboas a length. STAB BOAfING CLUB. , The final heats of tho Senior and Junior Fours, Star Boating Club, wore rowed oil Saturday afedrrioori Over the southerly course, there being eScdlldut watprj and both races created a good deal of amongst tho members of tho club, who gathered in .large numbers to see the conIn the semi-final heat of tho Sdhiof FoUrs (which was over a mile and half course), rowed on Thursday evening, a dead heat resulted between the crews stroked by W. E. Kendall and E. F. Nicol, the third crew, stfoked by B. Pownall.being only two feet behind at the finish. Tho J u dg6 fore decided that,Messrs Bondatl ?»iool should row dff again bn Saturday, but these two strokes genefotiaiy to allow B. Pownall’s crew to again on account of their having been so close up at the of the former heat. As permission waa given.to allow this, the three crews started again, the result of the race .being a win for B. JPownall’a crew, who finished a length ahead of Bendall’a crew, after a magnificent race, the three boats being close together for the whole of tho distance, and a great struggle tobk place at the finish, the crew stroked by E. F. Nicol being only A quarter of a length behind Bondall , sJ. The winning crew, which consisted of B. Pownall (stroke), J. Morton (3), A, H Barnett (2)* J. E. Widdop (bow) and Weston (oox), will hold for the ensuing year, tho Challenge Trophy presented by the late Mr J; H. Cock.

In the Junior Bace, which was rowed over a Course of ono mile, a good contest also resulted, tto winning craw being—A, J. S. Thomson (stroke), D. Menzies (3), C. E. fi. Zohrab (2), A. B. Bose (bow) aul Brewer (cox), who defeated the crow stroked by G. C. P, Tripe by three lengths, and that stroked by C. A. Harris by four lengths. This was Thomson’s first win in tho Star Club, and both he and his men received quite au ovation on returning to the clubhouse. This crew will hold for one year the handsome Challenge Trophy presented to tho club by Mrs Rhodes, of the Grange. Tho captain of the club (Mr G. H. Bothune) judged tho events, and the secretary:(Mr W. H. Morrah) was the starter, Tho next races in connection with the club will be tho Senior and Junior Pairs, entries for which close ou Wednesday next, and tho first heats will bo rowed on Wednesday, 3rd November,
