BALL AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
Bis Excellency the Governor gave a ball at Government House last night. There was a very large attendance, and the scone in the crowded ballroom was a brilliant one. The room was beautifully decorated, the walls being hidden with nikau palms and tree-fern fronds, interspersed with Arum lilies and other flowers, Hundreds of those flowers appeared to be growing out of banka of green palms. The Colonnade, decorated with treeferns and hung with many different flogs and Chinese lanterns, formed a most delightful sitting-out room. The staircase leading to the upstairs ’tearoom was flanked on either sid<? , r xth nikau palms and fringes of l/icom, while on the landing above much trouble had been gone to to beautify the long corridor, palms, ferns, -bloom and foliage plants being used with admirable taste and effects. The Countess of Ranfurly personally designed all.the decorations, thobalJroom and staircase owing much of their beauty to her personal exertions* The conservatory .Was converted into a sltiing-qut room, and pre* seated a fairy-like effect, being lit by maty coloured Chinese lanterns.
