FBILDXNG RACES. SECOND DAY, By Telegraph.—Tress Association. Feildtng, May 13. The second day’s racing took place to-day. Results : Denbigh Stakes.—Pompom, Sst 91b, 1; Otiti, Gst lllb, 2; The Artist, 7st 3lb, 8. Those were the only starters. Pompom led from early in the raoo, closely followed by Otiti, and won by two lengths easily, although Oliti finished strong. The Artist was several lengths away. Time, Imiix 52 2-ssoo. Dividend, XI 11s. Second Handicap Hurdles. Troubadour, lOst 21b, 1 ; Glonolg, Oat lllb, 2 ; Kangipai, lOst 131 b, 3. Also started Britannia and Mangatangaroa. The latter led fox about a mile, closely followed by Glenolg and Troubadour, who led- over the last jump and Avon by a length, Glenelg being half a length from Kangipai, Time, 3nxin 552-ssoc. Dividend, X2 13s.
Second Hack Hurdles. Fireworks, 10at 111 b, 1 j Redborry, 9st 71b, 2; En Avant, 9atslb, 3, Also started—Spermaceti, Tokanui, Halciono, Hautonga, Robin Hood, Mischief. Passing the stand the first time, Tokanui, Redberry [and Spermaceti led in a bunch, the latter going to the front at the back of the course, with Fireworks going up. The lop weight raced to the front at the bend into thestraight and won, hard hold, by about three lengths. En Avant finished strong two lengths away, being several lengths ahead of Hautonga, Time, 3min 57 S-Ssec. Dividend, £2 Is.
Oroua Handicap.— Light, 7st 121 b, 1; Undine, Gst 12lb, 2; Potion, 9st, 3. Lorelio also started. The placed horses led in the order named from start to finish, excepting that Lorelio wont up third for a short distance, again giving place to Lotion. The latter was favourite. Won by about two lengths. Time, 2m i ‘n 20 2-ssoo, Dividend, £3 16s.
Shorts Handicap.—Kalmea, 1; Bavaria, 2 ; Allington, 3, The only starters. Kalmea got the best of the start, but was held back for a furlong and then came again, leading into the straight and winning in the easiest possible manner by several lengths. Dividend, £1 19s. Second Hack Flying. —The Major, 1: Emerald, 2; The, Archer, 3. Also started Marina, Tamarcre, Stella, Puriri, Repose and Totia. The Major, Marina and tho Arcberwere first away,the latter loading into tho straight, closely followed by Marina and Tamarere. The Major, who had dropped away to nearly last early in tho race, came with a fast run on entering the straight and won by about a length, The’ Archer being about a nock from Emerald, who put in a claim on entering tho straight. A protest was entered against The Major, who was favourite, for crossing, but was dismissed. Mr Goodwin, owner of Tho Major, was cautioned for inconsistent running. Time, Imin 21sec. Dividend, £2 18s. Final Hack Handicap. —Emerald, X ; Wharangi, 2; Jolantho, 3. Also started — His Lordship, Bst 101 b; Marina, Bst 2lb; Calmarine, 7st 51b. A splendid start. The field raced together for three-quarters of a mile. Wharangi, Marina and Oalmarino led round tho back of tho course to tho straight, where Emerald drew away and won by two lengths, tho field in a bunch. Dividend, £6 lls. ASHBURTON RACES. BOOKMAKERS v. RACING CLUBS. Yesterday afternoon tho Appeal Court w-as occupied in hearing tho bookmaker’s case, Pollock v. Saunders, a tost case brought to decide whether racing clubs have a right to exclude bookmakers from the course during race meetings. Mr Jollicoe appeared for tho plaintiff, J. H. Pollock, and Mr Gully for tho defendant, representing the Feilding Jockey Club. The facto are that tho [club notified that they wo.uldnot admit bookmakers to their racemeeting on December 2nd and 3rd, 1896. The plaintiff bought a ticket and went on to tho course in the ordinary way, and afterwards began betting. Ho was warned, but refused to leave, and was ejected from tho course, Mr Jollicoe said the case was a special one removed from the Supremo Court, and though nominally brought by Mr Pollock against tho Feilding Jockey Club, was really one between theßookmakora’ Association and the Associated Racing Clubs of the colony to finally and definitely settle the question. The case will be continued to-day.
Mr W. Davis, trainer of Strathbraan, in* tends taking tho son of Apremont to Dunedin this week to fulfil his engagements at tho Dunedin Jockey Club May Meeting. Strathbraan will compote in the big Money, in which ho has been allotted Bst 121 b, top weight, and also in the short distance event on the first day.
