From Our Own Correspondent, Mastebton, October 15. Farmers in this district arc in high glee at the substantial rise in the price of wool. Several buyers aro offering 7d and 8d a lb for the wool, but most people prefer to take the risk themselves. They say if it pays big firms to buy at fid, it will pay them to take the risk and bold on to the wool. Mr C. A. Pownall has announced his intention of contesting the Mayoralty of Masterton in the interests «f progress and improvement. ft is probable that there will be three candidates for the office. At a meeting of parishioners of St. Matthew’s, held last evening, Mr J. Apperlcy was elected a vestryman. It was announced that the vestry had determined to introduce the envelope system. At a meeting of the Trust Lands Trustees yesterday it was decided that a brick town hall, at a cost (without furnishings) not exceeding J 22000 should, with. the sanction of the inhabitants, be erected. It was resolved that in the hall provision be made for theatrical and operatic companies, and that extra rooms be provided for meetings or classes. It was decided that seating accommodation for at least 800 persons was necessary. The opera “H.M.S. Pinafore" is to be produced by tha Juvenile Operatic Society next Thursday week. The performance promises to be a great success. The annual _ sports of the Wairarapa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club arc to be held on the 24th inst. The nominations, which closed last night, aro very satisfactory, the bicycle events having brought out a large number of competitors.
