The' Palmerston Agricultural and Pastoral Association has adopted a resolution that the Government, through the Minister of Lands, be requested to pass a Bill at once enacting that all frozen mutton before shipment be branded on each quarter with ink or dye indelibly, after the fashion followed by butchers who slaughter for those of the Jewish persuasion ; that the brand indicate by registered alphabetical letter —(l)whether the carcase be wsther, maiden ewe or lamb ; (2) whether heavy, medium or light weight; (3) at what works it was slaughtered and branded ; (4) grower’s name or station or registered mark; (5) whether good, medium or inferior quality; that the head butche or other suitable person at each fr.": .ing works, be sworn in by the Government as grader at such works, making such grader liable to imprisonment for palpable breaches in grading, and that the grading fee be, say. THE IV AIK AW A BURGLARY. Invercargill. October 15. Martin Norman Breen, Charles J. Pemberton, James Powerand John W. Whybrow were charged to-day with burglariously entering Templeton’s store at Waikawa and stealing a safe containing cash and documents of the value of iSOO. On the application of the police the charge against Whybrow was withdrawn, and he is the. principal witness for the prosecution. According to his evidence. Power was the ringleader, and it had been intended to commit the burglary a month before on payment of the co-operative workers, but they were late in maturing the plans, and put it off till the 2nd of October. Power tried to open the safe with a pick, but failed, and left it in the scrub, thinking it had been hidden from view. Breen was very drunk when they met him some distance from the store. The three men were committed for trial. Christchurch, October 15. This afternoon a fire was discovered in the shingle roof of the boys’ dormitory at Christ’s College, but was extinguished before much damage had been done. It was caused by sparks blown from a burning rubbish heap. The committee of the Insurers’ Protection Association is now engaged considering the tariff recently drawn up by the insurance companies.
