FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITION.

A return competition between the Wellington and Petone fire Brigades took place on the Reclaimed Band on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of a large concourse of people. Messrs C. F. Worth, Welling ton, and P. Smith, Petone, acted as judges, Mr J.'Doyle as timekeeper, and Mr G. Humphries as starter. The first event was the hose and reel flat practice, five men a side, which was gone through by the Wellington man in 55 4-sseo, and by the Petone team in 61aec. The Wellington team did the hose and ladder competition in 23 2-oseo, and Petone in 30 I-sseo. 'Xu the hose , and hydrant competition (.two. men), Wellington was first, having done the work in 25 2-sseo, Petone taking two seconds longer. After the competition, the members of both brigades accepted the invitation of tbe proprietors of the Switchback Railway to inspect the railway, &a. The members of the brigades then adjourned to the Troeadero, where an excellent spread was laid, and to which about 6a persons sat down. The following toasts were proposed and duly responded to“ The Queen,” “ Our Visitors,” “ Tho Petone Firo Brigade," “Tho Judges, Starter and Timekeeper,” “ The Wellington Fire Brigade,” “ Retired Members," “ The Ladies,” “ The Press.” Songs and recitations were contributed during the evening.
