SAD FATALITY AT A PICNIC.
A YOUNG WOMAN DROWNED,
HER FRIEND BRAVELY RESCUED,
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napieb, January 17. A sad drowning accident oceiu’red today. A party of young ladies went for a picnic on the banks of the Ti.taekuri River. Three of them—Myra Cunningham, Blla.MoYay and Ruth Foster—went in to bathe, but soon Miss Cunningham got out of her depth. Miss MoVay went to her assistance, but herself got into danger. Miss . Foster then went after Miss McYay, but finding that she was also getting beyond her depth, turned and just managed to reach the shore in an exhausted condition.
Her cries had called the attention of, some lads, one of whom, Frank Glover, went to the assistance of the other young ladies. , '
He managed, at great risk to himself, to save Miss MoVay, who struggled widly, and Glover might have been drowned had not another boy named Fred Smith gone to his aid. ~
. Miss Cunningham was drowned, her body not being recovered for an hour and a half afterwards. She was the daughter of a former runholder of lioburn (near Eangiora) and Pohui (Hawke’s Bay). Glover has 'been recommended for the Royal Humane Society’s medal.
