By Telegraph.—Press Association. A NARROW ESCAPE. Nelson, January 17. Some girls were bathing in the Maitai Eiver to-day, when two of them got beyond their depth, and were drowning. Their cries attracted a young man named Fred Poole, but when he jumped in, the girls clung to him, and ho had a narrow escape, but managed to struggle ashore with one girl, and two other men arriving, the second girl was also saved. . SERIOUS FALL FROM A HORSE, Westport, January 17. A serious accident happened this afternoon to Mr J, J. Moynihan, a well-known local solicitor. He was riding along the Niue Mile road with Dr Willis, when his horse bolted. Dr V\ illis, on coming up near Moynihan’s horse, found it riderless. Returning, the ■doctor found Moynihan lying beside , the road, he having been thrown off the horse. The injured man was convoyed to town, when an examination, revealed serious injury to the spine. The sufferer lies in a critical condition. A gloom has been oast over the town by the occurrence, as Mr Moynihan was popular with all classes. [Mr Moynihan is son of Mrs Moynihan of Barrett’s Hotel, Lambton quay.] THE INSPECTION OF CATHOLIC . SCHOOLS. Dunedin, January 17. The Education Board has unanimously decided to sanction the inspection, of Catholic schools by the Board’s inspectors. Timabu, January 17. The Education Board to-day deferred a reply to the request that the inspector should examine Catholic schools.
