CITY COUNCIL

An ordinary meeting of the City Council wae held last night. Present Councillors Smith, Vogel, Parsons, Wllleslon, Harris, Haroonrt, White, Barber and Ponty. Conns oillor Smith was voted to the chair in the absence of the Mayor,

A letter was received from Messrs Barrows and Tnrnbull, architects, asking permission to nse weatherboards for outside covering to walls for throe new buildings on the Terrace. They had been informed by the City Surveyor that the use of weatherboards on new buildings was prohibited in the city. The bydaw provided that rusticated boarding should be used. After some discussion it was decide 1 on the motion of Councillor Penty, seconded by Councillor White, that the permission be not granted. The Electric 1 ighting Committee reported that a number of applications for new lamps (21) bad been applied for in various parts of the city, and they bad arranged to go ronnd on Monday evening next to visit all the places where the lamps were ashed for, and would present a report at next meeting of the council.

An offer from the residents of Windsor place to contribute £5 toward tho cost of laying a drain in the street was accepted. Mr J, Thompson's application for permission to form a rlght-ofiway off Nairn street was granted, on condition that no more buildings were erected on the property. Several amendments were made in the burgess rolls.

Councillor Vogel stated that the agree* ment trade with the fishermen with reference to the depost of fish refuse was not being properly carried out. The refuse, ho stated, wes not being placed in the locality for which it was intended, and it was casing a great nuisance. The council decided that the Inspector of Nuisances should enquire into the matter. Consideration of a letter from r Boardmao, in reference to Kurori street and Grant road, was referred to the Public Works Committee.

Tha Public Works Committee's report, already published, was read and adopted. Accounts amounting to £l2lO 10s 2d were passed for payment. In theabscncoof Councillor Anderson, the motion, ‘That the salary of the Mayor for the present year be increased by the sum of £35 2s Gd (tho amount disallowed by tho Auditor-General for expenditure incurred at the reception of tho Governor),’ was adjourned until next meeting.
