The eleventh annual show under the auspices of tbis society was opened by His Excellency the Governor, who was aocoiu* paii>d by Lady Glasgow and a party from Government House, In the Diilished >eater* day afternoon. The entries are slightly less thau last year, but in almost every class the quality of the exhibits is above the average of previous years, while the exhibits come from all parts of the Colony—Auckland, New Plymouth, Napier, Wairarapa, Wan* ganui, Christchurch, Dunedin, Greymoutb, vVeatport, &o. Tho beet class in the show without doubt is the Brahmas, which com tains a number of mostoreditable specimens. The Langshans also are far above the average of other shows. The Baliance Challenge Tro* phy, which was promoted by Mr F. Rogen in honour of the memory of the late Premier, was allotted to the class for Langehan cockerels and pullets, and was won by Mr J. T. Sinclair, a breeder who bails from Wan* ganui, the town with which the late Mr Baliance was so loog associated. The winner obtains i 8 points, Mr George Remington, of Welliugton, coming next with 6 points, and MrG. A. Harknese, Nelson, came third with 2 points. Toe trophy was provided by publio subscription and must be won by the same competitor three times before it becomes his absolute property. Mr R. E. Bannister wica tho 15 guinea cup presented by Mr W. H. Levin (or the best light Brahma exhibit, which now becomes his absolute proparty, he having won it last year. Mr E. Donne for the second time wins Rogeu and Co.’a cup for the best bird hatohed from eggs supplied by the Arm, and it now becomes his property. Wyaudottes wore a large class and uniformly good, while the Leghorns also are very creditable specimens. Tho pigeons form a very large section of the show. Mr Burton Boys, of Masfcertoo, has sent a large number of exhibit', and carries oil a good many prizes, although several of bis birds which have previously borne an unbeaten record failed to catoh the judge’s eye, and were passed unuotiosd. Mr J. Wolker, of Auckland, sent as many as ninety exhibits of pigeons, and succeeded in winning Mr E. B. Bristow's £5 5s cash prize for the most successful exhibitor of pigeons. Tho canaries are not a large class, but they include some good specimens, aud are a very attractive feature of the show. Mr Louis P. Christeson, who aoted as judge in this department of the show, reports as follows: ’Taking the show n a whole, they are a very good collection, and contain some splendid quality birds, especially in the Norwich claeses. No. 873 is a nice, clean, compact bird, and is a show in himself, as Is also No. 875, both being fit for better com* petition. No. 874 is rather long, and, iu* stead of being a good bud, is a bad yellow. Two ticked yellows are shown, bat both are too broken in colour, and have been baJly washed. No 878 is rather patchy. No. 879 is a good bird, and would score in a Ergo class. No. SSlisalso a vorj'good specimen, but rather bad back crest. Class 273 contains four excellent birds, all shown in splendid condition and fresh from tho bath. No. SBS in this class is well worth the first and special. No. 885 spoils his chance by carrying his wings crossed. No. 891 is a good shape, and displays an abundance of meal and frosting. No. 892 shows too plainly bis ancestors were of the crested tribe. No. 896- Fall of beautiful meal and frosting. No. 893 is a bad yellow, instead of a good buff. No. 899 is a good cinnamon, but ought to have been " fed.” In tho green class they are both to? bronzy. Class 287 are not bad, but ought to bavo been destg nated “variegated” instead of “light.” No, 909 is a flue specimen of its class, and would look well with feeding. White tail feathers spoiled the chance of No. 908. The best bird in the show Is No. BC9, a splendid buff Belgian, which, with careful training, would be li: for the keenest competition.’ There are also in tho show some very good cage canaries sent by Mr i). D. Hyde, for exhibition only, and among similar exhibits is a goose aged 34 years, sent by Mrs E. Bannister, besides contributions from other friends of the society. Two pigeon flying races, for sweepstakes of 2s 6dper bird, from Napier and Wanganui respectively, will be flown during the show. A goodly number of entries has been received, and some Interesting contests may be expected. Despite the wretched weather that prevailed during the day there was a fair at* tendance at the show, and during the evening Jupp’s band played a lively selection of music outside the building The show which remains open to-day and Saturday, is well worth a visit.
