AGRICULTURAL SHOWS.

EGMONT A.UI! IC QLTURA.L AND PAS TOKAL ASSOCIATION'S CATTLE SHOW, (oun, TRAVELLING CORRE3TONDENT.) HaWeka, Thursday. The annual show in oonnsetlon with the above association was held la the show ground, Haworn, to-day. The number of entries showed an immense advance on the previous year, 780 being catalogued, as against about 500 last year, and were post 'entries also to be taken Into account, the number would probably total 850. The weather was all that could he desired, the recent rainfall having laid the dust and made the turf nice and springy, whilst the day was tine throughout, with gentle breeze. The attendance was exceedingly good, by Tar the largest that has over assembled on any similar occasion ; the ladies were present In goodly numbers j the Hawora Brass Band played at Intervals throughout the day ; aud altogether the scene was a most animated one. The stand was gaily decorated with flags, and during the judging of the horses ,was crowded. In sheep the entries, taken as a whole, were a really splendid lot, a number of the prizes being awarded to Wanganni owners. The first and second and highly commended for beet pen of seven sheep suitable for freezing, also the first prize fur best three fat sheep under 18 mouths, being awarded to block faces. Some well known sheep breeders on the Coast did not exhibit, notably Mr W. Wilson, of Woverley, whoso stud flook of t.lnoolna has established a high reputation, and who imports direct. There were 88 outries of sheep. In the cattle the Show was creditable, demonstrating the Wont Coast is capable of producing splendid cattle, both os regards size, quality and condition. Tho number of entries was 109, Mr Hunter, of Hawora, currying off the prize aud champion prizss for shorthorn ball under 15 months: Mr D. Buchanan, of Huwera, winning tho first prize for best fat bullock over tbreo and a half years, with a grand dark rod steer, bred by exhibitor, and wbioh would, probably, turn the scale at over 15 owt. Hero, again, such well-known shorthorn brooders as Mr A. A. Fantham, Hawora (Manager of the Egmont Farmers Union, and who has a truly grand herd), and Air Johu lions of Patea, wero not exhibitors, Tho special prize fur best pen of three oattlo, suitable for freezing. w«s carried off by Air A. Alexander, Hawera ; Mr G. Livingstone, Hawora, second ; tho latter gentleman taking first for best pea three heifers for same purpose, with three choice ones. The horse show was a feature of the Show ; there being between 250 and 300 entries, tho show in hacks, ladies’ hanks, and harness horses being oxcoptionally good. In the ladles’ hacks ridden hy a Indy there were fifteen entries, Mr A. G. Anderson's (o! Now Plymmtb) maro Lady Alice, hy Isaac Walton, taking drat prizj. Tho show of ponies on the whole was poor. The leaping competition was carried oft' by an exceedingly game and clever little buy cob, Tokatea, owned by Mr C. A, Pudge, against all comers, although not 14£ liando high, tho sumo cob being winner of first prize in his own class. It la to bo hoped by next Show better provision will bo made for arranging the horses entered in some particular portion of the ground, according to their respective classes. Today they were scattered hero and there, mixed up amongst non-competing hones ; placing tho general public, desirous of making com. parisona on theb own account, at a decided disadvantage. Indeed, there la generally room for improvement with respect to the accommodation for penning and placing exhibits. Encouraged by tbo success attending this year's Show, I have no doubt the Committee aud Mr C. A. Badge, the energotio and courteous secretary, will see to tho carrying out of various improvements on tho ground before tho meeting o! 1892. Wolseley's patent sheep-shearing machine, exhibited by the agents, Messrs Levin and Co., of Wellington, was at work on the ground, and attracted a large amount of attention, the excellent work done therewith being greatly admired and the opinion freely expressed that it was a great improvement on the old method.
