Information was received in Wellington yesterday that the New Zealand Shipping Co.’s chartered steamer Duke of Buckingham, 2020 tons, Captain Groombridge, which left this port for Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon about 5.30, had gone ashore near Kaikoura at 2 a.m. yesterday morning. She floated off about 6.30 a.m., and proceeded on to Lyttelton, tended by the e.s. Jane Douglas. From a telegram elsewhere it will be seen that she reached Lyttelton safely at 4.30 p.m. yesterday. It is not known what damage she sustained, but when she left .Kaikoura her fore compartment was full of water. No particulars are to hand as to how the accident happened.
