The Havelock Licensing Committee mat this morning. Mr NoNab appeared for the licensees, and argued that this being only a town district tho fees could not exceed £25 per annum. The Chairman intimated that the Committee were unanimously of opinion to grant the licenses on the same terms as here, tofore, viz , £4O per annum, with an addi* tional fee of £5 for extension to II p.m. Masterton, Juno 13.

A writ for £IOO was served on Mr A. W. Recall to day for alleged damages sustained by Mr E. Taylor through Mr Renall oh* struoting the Waipona River. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. I Dunedin, June 13. A five-roomed bouse at Mornington, owned by Ur J. McDonald and occupied by MrJas. Wallace, was totally destroyed by firs early this morning. Lyttelton, Jane 14. Mr J, E. March, of the Lands Depart* mont, addressed a public meeting in Lyttel. ton on Saturday night, and explained the amended regulations under which land could be taken for settlement. The meeting was a large one, and at the close of his address Mr March was accorded a vute of thanks, and jibe meeting expressed its approval of the businesslike manner in which the Hon J. McKenzie was dealing with tho land question.

A man named Thomas Bell, who was a clerk on H.M.S. Curagoa, and who has been in the hospital for some time, died on Saturday night, and was accorded a military funeral to-day. The Curagoa sailed at noon on Saturday, not waiting the arrival of the Rotorua with the Northern mail. Christchurch, June 12. Me J. £. March, Superintendent of Village Settlements, gave an address in the Oddfellows’ Hall to-night on the subject of laud available for settlement in tho North Island. The hall was crowded, and a large number of persons remained after the lecture to obtain farther Information, and there is every probability of an association being formed to send delegates to select land. June 13. Two large land sales were held to-day, one property being the Plnrsley estate of 550 acres, near Amberley, whioh brought £l3 10s per acre, or a total of £7423. The other was 700 acres, situate at Kirwce, whioh brought £S 5s per aero, or a total of £5782 lid. The prices are considered re. markably good and show increasing confidence in the future of the province, Auckland, Juno 13. An eight-roomed house, owned by Mr Matthew Edgor, of Onebunga, was burned down last night. It was insured for £3OO. Greymouth, June 14. The sharpest frost f:r a long time back was experienced here last night. The weather has been very cold lately, Waipawa, June 13. The taking of evidence in the Waikopiro case finished yesterday. The parties address the Court on Monday, and judgment is expected to be delieved shortly afterwards. The disputed will case is proceeding to-day, Invercargill, June 13,

The Invercargill South School Committee have unanimously decided to inform the head master that the use of Wfaitcombe and Tombs’ tasks and cards Is objectionable to the Committee, and to request the baaseholders to refrain from purchasing them. The school roll numbers 600.

The Wairio Licensing Committee have granted a new license in face of the local option poll declaring against an increase. The reason given for discarding the vote is that the polling places were limited to one for the whole district, which comprises three ridings, and that consequently the majority of the ratepayers were prevented from vot. ing. The Committee contend that the poll waa not a true expression of the opinion of the residents. Complications are likely to arise.
