(per prsss association - .) Timap.u, June 12. A Chinese named Ah Woi was committed for trial to-day for comprehensive larcenies. He appears to be a champion pilferer. He has been employed as rouse-about at the Criterion Hotel for the last twelve months and has accumulated a variety of goods to a total value of £4O, nearly all from the hotel, and the property of the licensee and his family, and of boarders and servants. In consequence of Judge Denniston’s reading of the Act, the local Charitable Aid Board have instructed their solicitors to prepare an Amending Bill to substitute for clause 74 of the present Act a definite provision as to the liability of districts to maintain destitute persons going to other districts for relief. The South Canterbury members will be requested to support the amendment this session.

Christchurch, Jane 12.

The annual meeting of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club was held to-night. Tho Committee’s report stated that there were 97 ordinary, 7 supernumerary, and 3 life members on the roll. The balance in hand is £137 14s lOd. Mr F. Wilding was elected president. The Working Men’s Co-operative Soo.'ety celebrated their first anniversary by a social gathering. The Association was formed a year ago with 54 members, and now numbers 300, each of whom has a trifle over £3 10s to his credit in the Society. Auckland, June 12.

Tho Mayor and Town Clerk have left for Wellington to attend the Municipal Conference.

Gkeymouth, Jane 12.

Mr Guinness, M.H.E., for the Grey, and Mr Matheson, Mayor ot the borough, leave for Wellington at noon by tho Mawhera. The latter attends the Municipal Conference. A fire broke out in Tainui street at five o’clock, when Young’s bakery and residence, and Adams’ boardinghouse were totally destroyed. The water supply was defective, or the bakery might.have been saved. A strong breeze was blowing. The insurances are .—Young’s bakery and dwelling, £250 in the National; furniture and stock, £2OO in the Union. The boardinghouse, £2OO in the South British. A gtod deal of Adams’ furniture was saved, and very little of Young’s, but some flour was saved.
