The reply to the resolution passed at the Midland Railway Deviation mooting on Friday, received from Mr Seddon yesterday, was considered unsatisfactory, and another meeting is called for Monday evening to consider his reply. Dunedin, May 3. The Post and Telegraph officers hold their first social reunion last evening, the gathering being largely attended and a great amoeas. The Postmaster General sent a letter stating that ho would have had much pleasure in being present, but found he had to leave for Invercargill on business which could not be delayed. Mr W. Young, president of the Post and Telegraph Society, presided, and numbers of pressmen attended by invitation. The success of the first social is likely to load to its being an annual affair.
There is to be no formal opening of the Otago Central Railway. The train will run through early to-morrow morning, and it ia intended to run an excursion train next Saturday.
The unemployed sent to Gatlin's Railway, appear likely to make fair wages. It will be some three weeks before another batch can be sent, as the line has to be laid off through the bush. Very cold weather prevailed yesterday, with rain, and two very heavy showers of hail. No damage In reported. Captain Meades, who was in charge of the Wanaka when she stranded, has been retired from the Union Company’s service. Wanganui, May 2.
Francis T. Kenny was committed for trial on a charge of maliciously setting fire to the Commercial Hotel.
