LOST ON MOUNT EGMONT.

Stratford, April 6. A ead fatality Is believed to have occurred on Mount Egmont. On Thursday last a young man named William H. Southwood left here on horseback to make the ascent, and do some shooting. Not having returned on Friday, a party of three went to look for him on Friday night, having a terribly rough time of it. They found his horse, overcoat, and pocketboot. Yesterday a search party of twenty-nine, with Csnstable Levy, went up, but could not find him. They found bis gnn, leggings, and spurs just below the snow line, bat a heavy snow storm and sleet compelled them to return to their camping ground. Three of the party stayed there all night with the intention of resuming the search to-day, if tho weather will permit. A search in his portmanteau shows that be is a life insurance agent for the New Zealand Government Insurance Department, Very little hopes are entertained here of his being found alive. New Plymouth, April 7.

A strong party under Messrs Curtis and Penn have returned from searching for the missing man Southwood. His gnn, leggings, and spar were found on the ridge some 500 ft higher than where the horse and coat were found, and plainly indicated the man’s intention of ascending the peak. No farther traces oould be found higher. The gorge on both aides of the ridge was oacafnlly examined to the snow line, bat above that point the Arctic oeverity of the weather prevented anything being done.
