THE NEW PLYMOUTH MURDER.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) New Plymouth, May 13. The inquest concerning the murder at the Recreation Grounds was continued to-day. Sergeant Duffio flttly contradicted the evidence of the witness Maher, who gave evidence in favour of the prisoner, to the effect that he saw the deceased alive between 1 and 2 p.m. on the 11th of April. The theory of the prosecution is that Maloney was murdered between 11 and 12.a.m. The prisoner’s counsel, it is expected, will set up an alibi, relying upon the evidence that Maloney was seen alive at 2 p.m. Under cross-examination Sergeant Baffin stated that he did not search Maloney’s house the day that the body was found, nor did he do so for two days afterward. A man named Cornell had charge of the house. On behalf of the polioe. Darby Claffey was recalled, and stated that he bad made an inventory of the articles in the deceased’s house, and gave it to Sergeant Baffin on'Satarday, the day the body was found. Harriet Ward, dressmaker, deposed that on the 11th April she saw deoeased alive at 1 p.m. in Carrie street. She saw him as she was returning from her dinner to

the shop. She had not seen him for nine months previously, but was quite sure she was not mistaken. The inquest was resumed at 7.30 p.m,, when Miss Ward was reexamined. The inquest is still proceeding.
