An interesting return has been compiled by the New Zealand Trade Review, showing the respective imports into New Zealand during the twelve-monthlyperiods ending 30th September, 1885, 1886, 1887, and 1888. From this it appears that the import value, which in 1885 was L 7,439,848, fell in 1886 to L 6,982,121; in 1887, still further to L 6,225,068 ; and in 1888 lowest of all, viz., to L6,027*209, this last being the smallest import total for sixteen years, or since 1872. On the other hand, the exports,' after a slight retrogression in 1886, have steadily and substantially increased, until this year they exceed. the imports by the large sum of L 1,371,920, the yearly totals being respectively as follows ;—IBBS, L 6,712,211 ; 1886, L 6,572,470 ; 1887, L 7,044,237 ; and 1888, L 7,399,129. It may be acded that the respective Customs receipts during those four twelvemonthly periods were L 1,431,309 in 1885, L 1,322,921 in 1886, L 1,263,261 in 1887, and L 1,312,812 in 1888. The large advance in the value of our exports is very satisfactory, and we trust that this progress will continue.
