TESTIMONIAL TO MR FIRTH.

A meeting was held at the Pier Hotel last evening to consider what steps should be taken to make some suitable recognition of the eminent aerviees rendered by Mr JT. P. Firth to athletics in this city. There were about 30 gentlemen present, thoroughly representing the various cricket, football, and rowing clubs, find other athletic institutions of Wellington. Mr W. Fitz Gerald, who occupied the chair, expressed his strong sympathy with, the object of the meeting, It was not neoes-' sary to say what Mr Firth's attainments were, except tb at he bad done more for athletic sports than any other man in the city ; and they all mast regret bis departure from Wellington, There was no doubt they mast get np some testimonial of their gratitude to Mr Firth. (Applanee.) Mr O. A. Knapp moved,,That a testimonial and address be presented to Ur Firth before his ' leaving Wellington, from the various cricket, football, and other athletic clubs, and all persons in Wellington interested in athletics, and that a committee be appointed to draw np the address and to take (be management of the whole affair, the Committee tq consist of Messrs Ifnapp, Nicholls, Bate, Campbell, Davy, Batkin, Alps, Farmer, Fitzgerald, and Barnett (Secretary), with power to add to their number- A letter was received from Mr W. H. Levin, expressing sympathy with the proposal, and enclosing a cheque for two guineas, with the hope that steps would be taken to present Mr Firth with some lasting token of the esteem in which be is held. The motion, being put, was carried unanimously, It was decided tq add the names of the secretaries of tlje various qlnba to the Committee. The Chairman expressed a hope that the gathering woqld be a thoroughly representatiye one of all sports. (4pplanse.) It was decided that the subscription lists should be returnable by the Friday after next. This was all the business, -
