A woman named Johanna Moore was committed for trial to-day un'er a charge of larceny, the, circumstances of which are peculiar. It appears that two ladies were at the Christchurch Railway Station last Saturday, and went to a private apartment, in which one of them left her parse, containing over £2O. The accused entered the apartment just after, and pocketed the purse. She did not give information to . the police or railway officials, but hurried _away in company with a friend, Tbe lady having missed her purse, and remembered where she bad left it, sut-pbion was directed to the woman Moore, who was called back by a constable. She did not then tell him of her find, and it was only when directly asked if she had found any money that she produced the miss ing purse. Mr Beetb.am, R.M., conddersd tbe case to be just on the borderland between larceny and no larceny, and left it for a jury to determine whether there was any intention to steal.

The Chamber of Commerce have decided to accept the offer of tbe Government to send a delegate from tbe Chamber by the Jessie Nlcoll to tbe South Sea Islands.

At the City Council the question of re* organising the Fire Brigade was considered, and in committee it was decided to make tbe Brigade a pa d one, and have aaupfrmtendent, two branchmeu, and sixteen pa : d members. A man named Richard Faville was arrested ou Saturday night ou the charge of arson at Oeu. Faville bad been tamed oat of an hotel for being drank and disorderly, and soon after the occupants of the house ha 1 gone to bed a large box containing soma - inflammable material was .found to be burning close to the ou'side wall of the home (a wooden one). Faville was discovered crouching behind a fence near the hotel, and he was brought up at Maaaia this morning and remanded. Carterton.
