William Noakes was indicted for having, on May let| sold a gup, valued at 80s, to one Samuel Parr .without being licensed to do so, and contrary to the, Arms Act.’ Mr Bell, Crown Prosecutor,’* in reply to the Judge, said the impression of the‘authorities was, that, the .affair was a mistake, and the Crown'did not‘.intend to pres# the charge against the prisoner. . . , The prisoner, when arraigned, pleaded guilty, bat said he bad committed the offence in complete ignorance of the law. " ■ , His. Honor pointed but that the law was a very necessary one in this' colony, but after reading the depositions, he could scarcely regard the prisoner as a felon, He appeared to have made ’ a' mistake, arid would therefore only be" sentenced to one day’s hard labor. As the sentence would, date from the commencement of the ' first day’s sitting; of the Court, the prisoner would be able to goat large. .
