The team selected by the Wellington City Rifles to compete agaioet the Masterton team arrived here by the late train last night, and were welcomed at the railway station by the Masterton Volunteers and Band, and escorted to the Club Hotel, where a sumptuous repast was provided, to which about forty Volunteers, including the visitors, sat down. Captain Donald presided, and was supported on the right and left by Captain Crowe and Lieutenant Ballinger. After justice had been done to the viand*, the usual loyal and patriotic toasts were given and re ponded to. The proceedings were interspersed with songs, capitally, rendered by members of both corps, and the party broke up at 12 o’clock, after enjoying i* very pleasant evening. Great credit is duetto the managing Committee and host £2 kins for carrying out the arrangements, which war* moR successful.
At 8 o’clock this morning the competing teams proceeded to the range at the Manaia, and at 12 o’clock the match was concluded with the result of a victory for. Masterton by three points. The following are the scores ; Wellington,—R,indill, 64 ; Chuck, 57 ; W. Bdlinger, 53 ; Banger, 60 ; Burton, 49 ; Ross, 48 ; Hale, 48 ; Kenu, 45 ; Crowe, 42 ; Bright, 35. Total. 491. The Building Society held its aunual meeting last night at the Council Chambers, the attendance of shareholders being larger thvc iu former years, Mr J. C. Boddington in th* chair. The Manager, Mr IL Brown, read-the report and balance-ah# et, which were of a satisfactory nature, showing good results for the past year. The retiring Directors, Messrs Boddington and Bunny, were re-elected, and Messrs VV. Sellar and D. \V. : , Mclntosh were re-elected Auditors for the ensuing year. Votes of thanks were accorded to the Directors, Manager, and Chairman, and the meeting do*ed. -
The funeral of the late Mr C. A. Vallanco will tike place on Monday, the 25th instant. The Masonic Lodges of the dfctrctare to t»ko part in the procession, the deceased gentleman having been one of the oldest members of the Masterton Dodge, K.C., and a Past Master of the craft, also at one time holding office in the District Grand Lodge.
