PAYMENT OF MEMBERS.
(FROM a COKBESrONDENI.) Auckland, June 24.
The ‘‘Star,” referring to the payment of members at the proposed rate of £BOO a year, says : —“ The amount of honorarium ought, wo maintain, to be just sufficient, and no more, to enable qualified working men to take their seats in the House. The present sum of £2OO a year has secured that-result. He will be a poor representative who cannot supplement it by private exertions during the remaining eight months of the year. To increase the amount will not secure a better representation of the working class, but in all probability it would have an opposite effect by holding out temptations to a set of professional politicians, for whom the present rate of pay offers very little temptation in the present condition of the colony. Moreover, every act of extravagance in Government must be resisted.
