THE UNITED STATES WOOL DUTY. Sydney, December 21. A farewell banquet was given to Sir Henry Parkea, the Premier, last night. Over one hundred members of Parliament were present, together with a number of leading citizens. The affair was a great success. It is currently stated that Dr. Renwick, the Secretary for Mines, will succeed Mr Hoskins as Secretary for Lauds, and that Mr R. P. Abbott will be appointed to the portfolio of Mines. Two fresh cases of small-pox in Woollooraooloo have been reported to-day. Brisbane, December 21. _ A serious fire occurred last night in Petrie-terrace, in this city, resulting in the destruction of several houses. The insurances include £4OO in New Zealand offices.

Arrived this morning—Union Company’s steamship Te Anau, from the Bluff.

The Agent-Generalship for Victoria, in London, has been offered to Mr Murray Smith. He has, however, declined the appointment. It is announced that the Government has declined to co-operate with the other Australian Colonies and New Zealand in the measures which are being taken to induce the Government of the United States to reduce the duty levied on wool imported from the Australian colonies.
