Carey's Opera Company opened with the u Pirates of Penzance ” to a crowded home this evening, and were accorded a hearty reception.

Christchurch, November 25.

Charters was committed for trial to-day on a trial of forging a bill of exchange for £147 10s. Counsel applied tor bail, saying several substantial securities could be obtained. The Magis' rats, though averse to granting it, consented to reserve his final decision on the point till Monday. Shares in the Westport C >al Company are being rapidly applied for here.

Dunedin, November 25.

At a meeting to-day it was decided to form a company for making jam and preserving fruit. Shares iu the company are limited to 15 at £4OO each. Thirteen were taken up. As the applicants for the remainder were nonconsumers, it was agreed they should not be alloted to them. A suitable modern plant from a neighboring colony has been offered to the colony.

Gtsboene, November 25.

On Wednesday Mr McKay, editor of the “Herald,” was publicly horsewhipped in Gladstone-road by John Gannon, brother cf M, J. Gannon, a candidate for East Coast, for publishing a letter containing alleged libellous reflections on family connections. Gannon was charged with the assault tbis morning, and the case was dismissed by tbe Bench without remark.

Captain Morris, master of the ill-fated barque Glimpse, was a passenger by the Hero. It is stated that the liability of the Government for cattle killed on unfenced sections of railway will be tested shortly in tbe law courts.
