DISTURBANCE AT PUNGAREHU.
(UNITED P11K33 ASSOCIATION.) Haweka, May IS. There are rumors of disturbance near Pungarehu between the Armed Constabulary and the natives. It is stated that the latter beat a constable and a civilian. The Armed Constabulary retaliated, aud, it is stated, burnt a native whare. It is believed the matter has been reported to the Government, who have ordered an investigation. [The Hon. W. Roileston, Native Minister, received a communication on the subject from Hawera yesterday, but the information which it conveyed is of the most meagre description. It is to the effect that some constabulary men had a quarrel with an old Maori, in which the latter was subjected to some blows. His children coming to his assistance he was enabled to retaliate. The statement about a whare having been burnt down appears to have no foundation in fact. The quarrel arose out of purely personal matters, and no significance attaches to it. Mr. Roileston is investigating the subject, and expects to be placed iu possession of all the facts during the course of the day ]
