THE EASTERN QUESTION.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEAIiAND TIMES.' ■’ Sir, —By the latest accounts seems to be master of the situation in the. Eastern ■question, and with some show of reason, for the Greek Christians in Turkey naturally look to Russia,as their protector, and the firm atti-, tude now assumed by the Emperor will probably bring matters to a crisis. But.,the presence of a British fleet in the Dardanelles and the formation of an intrenched camp at Adrianople would effectually check Sclavonic aggression and lead to a pacific solution of the difficulty. One thing, however, remains for us to do. Atf a portion of the British-speaking people we can express our abhorrence of the atrocities that have been perpetrated in Bulgaria. Dunedin has spoken already, and Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland must follow suit, and give a decided utterance to public opinion in this matter. Europe is near for material aid, and our money might not be wanted, but the least we can do for our suffering fellow Christians is to express our sympathy with them and show our readiness, to assist if necessary. Most of these poor people belong to the Greek and Roman Catholic Churches now, but in the earlier times Bulgaria was a refuge for the primitive Protestants, and she has thus a claim on all the great churches.—l am, &c., Colonist.
