(PEE PKESB AGENCY.) Auckland, Wednesday. The new railway wharf was used by the Europa for the first time to-day. Bloomhall, agent for the Temperance Settlement, proceeded to the : Waikato to-day to inspect a block at the West Waikato river. He will afterwards visit Taranaki and the other provinces. He requires a hundred thousand acres of land. After the end of the month the General Government offices are to be concentrated in the Provincial Council building and the Supreme Court, and the present Provincial buildings are to be relinquished. Next week Whitaker will decide the question as to the alternate surveys for the extension of ; the Kaipara railway line to Auckland, when the work will be begun. Nelson, Wednesday.
Sharp and Pickering report the sale of a large portion of the late Mr. Redwood’s property in Waimea West. One hundred acres sold at £3O, and one hundred at £25 per acre, and other portions at a somewhat lower price. Millar, P.S.A., died to-day after a long illness.
Dunedin, Wednesday,
Application has been made on behalf of the Athenmum to the Commissioner of Customs for a grant of the Provincial Library. Arrangements are pending with Moorhouse, the Australian champion walker, for a visit to Dunedin. His backers intimate their willingness to give a liberal start to Jacobson, Bowley, or any other New Zealand pedestrian.
: A charge of arson was heard at the Police Court yesterday against Andrew Grainger. The prisoner was accused of setting fire to certain stacks of timber, with intent to defraud the South British Insurance Company. Pive boys swore to seeing the accused going from the scene of the fire at a quick pace. _ The defence endeavored to prove an alibi. A number of witnesses swore that the prisoner
was six miles from the fire when it occurred. The case was adjourned I 'till Thursday, the prisoner being allowed bail in his own surety of £SO.
Four more nominations have been received for the Dunedin Cup, viz., b. g. Spring Jack, aged ; ch. h. The King, 5 years; bl. c. Stiletto, 3 years ; and c. h. Behgiroo, aged. These horses all belong to W. S. Cox, of Melbourne. There are now forty-two nominations for the Cup. An inquest was held to-day on A. F. Dudney, who poisoned himself with strychnine. A verdict was returned of “ Died of poison administered by himself while suffering from temporary insanity." A preliminary public meeting re the Bulgarian atrocities is convened by the Mayor for Friday afternoon. , . 1 . .. Cheistohueoh, Wednesday.
■ Between five and six o’clock this morning a fire occurred in Cashel-street. It commenced in the back room of the premises occupied by JV Donaldson, .general dealer, and extended to the adjacent buildings, occupied by Tompkins, tinsmith. Donaldson’s stock , and premises were totally destroyed. Tompkins’ building and part of his stock were also destroyed. The origin of the fire is unknown. , Donaldson was insured for £l5O on the building, and £l4O on the stock, in the London, Liverpool, and Globe offices. Tompkins was insured for £2OO on the building, and £IOO on the stock, in the New Zealand office. Both men are heavy losers.- Donaldson estimates his loss above the insurance at £7OO.
