We heartily congratulate Mr. Drewin, late chief officer of the City of Auckland, on his promotion to the command of the ship Bebington, now loading at Napier for London. Mr, Drewin has secured many friends by his uniform courtesy and kindliness of disposition, as well as by his business-like straightforwardness.—Auckland Star, Dec. 11. We are glad to observe that the three-masted schooner Alma, which lately was so severely handled in a storm off Greymouth, and left that port in jury rig for Melbourne, arrived there safely on the 2nd instant. The steamer Napier spoke the Hannah Barratt inside Kapiti, beating down with a light southerly wind. She wished to be reported. The Napier also spoke Messrs. Brogden and Sons schooner Julius Vogel lying off Manawatu waiting to get in. The Rangatira spoke the Auckland brig Pakeha fifteen miles north of Castle Point, steering south. Tararua arrived on Saturday aafter a run from Nelson of fourteen hours. She left Port Phillip Heads on the 9th ; experienced light wind and fine weather until the 12th, when a strong S.W. gale sprang up, which compelled her to heave-to for fifty hours. Fine weather was encountered from this time till arrival at Hokitika on the 17th ; left Hokitika at ten a.m., and arrived off Nelson at oight a.m. on the 18th ; left Nelson at five p.m., and arrived at Wellington as above. The barque Cordelia, bound for Newcastle, sailed down to the anchorage ground off Pipitea Point on Saturday forenoon, to wait for a fair wind to go out of the harbor. The mooring buoy at the Spit lately sank in consequence of the rivets having got chafed and fallen out, thus allowing the water to get in. The buoy has been brought on shore to be repaired.— Hawke’s Bay Herald , Dec. 18.
