A NEW MAYOR.

Sir, —It is quite clear from what has taken place in the City Council during the last tour years, that a “new Mayor" is wanted. The City Council, at the request of the ratepayers, passed a resolution to the effect that it was desirable “ that the Mayor should bo elected by the ratepayers.’’ The General Assembly passed an Act to give effect to the wishes of the ratepayers. The present Mayor (a City Councillor), by effluxion of time ceases to be Mayor, and a new Mayor has to be elected. , The ratepayers will stultify themselves if they elect a Councillor to be their Mayor. This assertion may be safely made without any offence to Mr. Dransfield, who will be relieved from “treading upon other people’s corns," by his usefulness being retained as a Councillor. A Mayor (chairman) outside the Council has long been wanted. A healthy state of things will result from the change. It is not desirable that Mr. Borlase should change places with Mr, Dranstteld at the City Board. But it is desirable that the ratepayers should carry out their expressed wishes of electing a suitable gentleman to fill the office of Mayor; outside the present Council. That gentleman is now requested to perform those duties, and when elected Mr. Moorhonse will, without bombast, faithfully discharge them.—l am, Ac,, Bubo ess.
