MANAWATU HIGHWAY BOARD.
[eroji our own correspondent.] A meeting of this Board was held at the Court House, Palmerston, on Friday, the 2nd instant. Members present—Messrs. Snelson (Chairman), Dalrymple, Stewart, F armor, McKenzie, and Hughey. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed as amended, viz., the part having reference to McDowell’s contract for formation of footpaths in Palmerston—the word “ unfinished” to be inserted instead of that of “ unworkmanlike.” ‘ CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Foxton, in reference to the transfer of the Board’s account to the Bank of Australasia. It was resolved that the matter stand as arranged at the last Board meeting, A letter was read from Mr. McArthur, subagent to the Feilding Corporation, requesting the Board to undertake certain necessary works on the line of road connecting the township of Feilding with that of Saudon. It was resolved that the matter receive due attention from the Board, when there is sufficient funds at its disposal for that purpose. The Secretary was instructed to remind Air. Halcombe that ha!/ of the rates due on the Feilding estate for last year were still unpaid.
±c was resolved that the Chairman be requested to draw the attention of the Government to the present dangerous state of the Foxton and Sandou and Rangitikei roads, much damage having been done by the late floods.
Tlie Treasurer reported that the sum of £749 was lying to the credit of the Board at the Bank of New Zealand. The Collector was instructed to summon such defaulters as lie could find, and proceed with the collection of the rates due for 1874 and 1875. TENDERS. A tender was received from W. McDowell for clearing the road line from Palmerston to the public reserve. As the price named was considered much too high, it -was resolved to let the matter lie over for the present. A te der from Mr. Grammer for the work on Ran ICawa road was considered. It was resolved that the sum of £4 be expended on the erection of culverts, so as to enable the settlers to finish their portion of the work, as agreed with the Board. The Inspector of Works was instructed to visit the road line leading to the property of Millson. and others, situated in the Rangitikei line district, and prepare an estimate for work required, particulars to be laid before the Board at its next meeting. The Inspector was also instructed to inspect sites for culverts and bridges required on the J ackytown road, and prepare estimates. A number of accounts were passed, and the Board adjourned, to meet again on Friday, tlie 6th November.
