THE OPERA.
THE DAUGHTER OE THE REGIMENT. Last night the favorite opera of “ The Daughter of the Regiment” was produced ’for the first time since the return of the company to Wellington. It is not a work which makes many demands on the company, but it is pleasing throughout, and the story is so interesting as to be always attractive. There was again a very good house, notwithstanding the unfavorable character of the weather—a bleak wind, carrying dust jn uncomfortable quantity, ar d clouds threatening rain having marked the evening. Tlie cast was the same as when the opera was last performed here, and it is only necessary to say that Miss May, Mias Lambert, Miss Howe, Mr. Hallam, Mr. Rainford, Mr. Vernon, "Mr Lester, and the other artists engaged, were all in good voice, and the opera went throughout in the most agreeable manner. This evening Miss’ May will take, a benefit, for the first time, and a great treat will be afforded. A r erdi’s very popular opera of “il tkovatore” Will be performed not only , for the first time by the English Opera Troupe, but for the first time in English in New Zealand. Miss May lias never before appeared in the trying part of “Leonora,” but wc have not the slightest doubt that she will acquit herself well. AVe do not doubt that Miss May’s exertions as the prima donna of tho company will be remembered, and rewarded by a “house,” the number of which will only be limited by the capacity of the building. ~ .
