THE EFFIGY BURNING AT AUCKLAND.
TO TUE EDITOR. Sir, — Jlc the- silly effigy business, the account of it sent to you per the Press Agency is grossly exaggerated, and evidently intended to mislead people outside “our Province.” There was no groaning, hooting, &c., except from a few Provincial officials and hangers-on. The few hundred people present were in good humor, and there was not the slightest necessity for the police to interfere. A Provincialist tried to read an “ address of condemnation," but ho could not get a hearing. You may not be aware that the local agent for the Press Agency is a partner of the Provincial Treasurer, who is editor of the Auckland Evening Star, and part proprietor of that respectable journal. In the interests of truth, it does not seem right that the general public should be misled by interested Provineialists who happen to be telegraphic agents.—l am., &c., An Eye-witness of the Effigy Foolery. Auckland, Sept. 1,
