THE TRUCK SYSTEM.
TO THE EDITOR. , Sir, —As an old subscriber to your paper, I wish to invoke your assistance in exposing what is a great piece of injustice to every retail dealer in Palmerston. It is this : A well-known contractor in this district, and one, too, w ho has done exceptionally well out of the Government, is not content with the legitimate profits of his business, and engages in an illegal competition with the storekeepers of the place in an underhand way. Everyone knows that when an overseer or timekeeper sells tobacco, molo trousers, serge shirts, or any other article, usually found in a country store, he is but the dummy representative of some one else. Of course the pleasant picture deceives no one, and the men employed are not long in finding out that if they expect constant employment they are also expected to deal at the “tommy shop.” I think the attention of the Government ought to be called to this matter. —I am, &c., Palmerston. Palmerston, Sept. 1.
