MELBOURNE. The Argus of the Ist inst. reports:— In the import markets business generally is.quiet, and though a fair amount of sales is reported, yet these are confined to one or two specialities. Breadstuffs are moving off very slowly. Hour in bakers’ lots is disposed of at £l3 155., bags returned; for parcels £l3 ss. is wanted, and we do not hear of sellers under. Wheat is quoted at 6s. 3d. for best quality, but there is none offering, and no sales are reported. Oats are very quiet; quotations for feeding range from 4a, 9d. to 65., and ss. 3d. is asked tfor milling. The J. Nicol Fleming, which has arrived from New Zealand, brings wheat, oats, and barley. Maize is still quoted at- 4s. 7d., aud the market appears a shade firmer; sales can now be made more freely at the price. New season’s teas are still going off very readily. Of the Legislator’s, 1500 packages additional have been quited at Is. Bd. to 2s. Bd., and about 450 packages of the Amoy’s also been sold. Sales of old teas are likewise mentioned at Is. to Is. 2d. Kerosene is in moderate request. We hear of 1000 cases Devoe’s having been placed at la. 6d. for transhipment. Other business is also reported, though not at so extreme a price. Malt, in trade parcels. Is saleable at up to 11s. 6d. A line of 3000 bushels has changed hands at a concession on that rate, however. A parcel of Barrett’s twist bos been sold at Is. s}d. In liquids, a large business has been done, chiefly at auction; Farther considerable sales privately have been effected likewise. Under the hammer, ports were disposed of at £22105. to £25 for common, and £3B 10a. to £44 for medium. Low sherries realised £23105. to £25105. for common : low medium brought £4O to £43, and fine medium £54 to £6O. Brandies were got rid of at prices showing no improvement on the late decline. One hundred and fifty hhds. and quarters Bisquifc Bubouche’s were cleared of at 7s. td 7s. Id. Privately, we learn of 250 hhds- Martcll's and Hennessy'a {having, in addition to previous sales reported, been taken up on terms witheld. Otard's case was disposed of. at 245. ; Martell’s three-star, dark and pale, brought 31a. to 405,.6d. ; and Bonis Monnie's from 20s. to 20a. 6d. Whisky was sold at ss. od. for bulk.
