THE NEW CHURCH, TE ARO.

An adjourned general meeting of , persons interested in the erection of a second Anglican church in the parish of Te Aro, was held at the office of Messrs. Bethune & Hunter last night, at which a large number of influential gentlemen, actively interested in the movement, were present. His Excellency the Governor attended, and, as on a previous occasion, evinced a lively interest in the proceedings. The Bishop occupied the chair, and briefly reviewed the business of the last meeting, and explained the object of the present one, which was the consideration of the best means of procedure towards securing funds for the erection of a’ church and parsonage. The Eight Eeverend Chairman thought; himself, that it would be advisable to erect a church at once, so that it might be added to. The parsonage could be afterwards proceeded with. , The Eev. Mr. Grainger had arrived, and it was to be hoped that he might be induced to accept the incum- • bency, if the new district could soon be got into working order. The question of site was re-opened and evoked considerable discussion, in the course of which Mr. Bowles stated that another site was now available, which would prove much more convenient, being nearer the centre of population. The piece alluded to> was section 282, in Adelaide Road, and owned by a wealthy landed proprietor at present in England, who, it was thought, would let the Church have it at a very moderate sum; in fact, it was not at all improbable, if communicated udth on the matter, that he might present it to them. The speaker suggested that subscription lists could be opened and preliminaries arranged, without deciding upon the site until the owner of this land had been communicated with. A number of gentlemen took part in the discussion, the majority speaking in favor of the present site near the'College, In the course of his remarks, His 7 Excellency said he trusted that, notwithstanding individual opinion on the subject of site, if the majority were in .favor of the • present one, all would heartily co-operate in rendering assistance towards the object in view, Resolutions were carried to the effect that all present shoTtld allow themselves to be added to the general committee ; that a subscription list should be at once opened in aid of the erection of a church; that a sub-committee,, consisting of His Excellency the' Governor, His Lordship the Bishop, the'Kevs. Archdeacon Stock and Harvey, Messrs. Pharazyn, Bowles, Pearce, Kebble, and De Castro, be appointed, five to form a quorum, to canvass for subscriptions and generally forward the movement and that the sub-committee report progress to the general committee at a meeting on Tuesday, the Bth September. It was understood that the conclusion already arrived at with reference to a site should not be interfered with in the matter of securing subscriptions by the sub-committee without calling a meeting of« the general committee, and putting to them any proposed amendment. During the meeting it was estimated' that the Church population of the new district would be about 2000, and the cost of erection not more than £3 per sitting. At the conclusion of the' meeting a subscription-list was opened, and started by His Excellency with £25, Mr. Pearce following with £SO. 'A number of sums ranging from £lO to £25 were subscribed by gentlemen in the room, making a total of £l7O. The sub-committee meet at noon to-day at Government House for the purpose of electing a secretary and the transaction of other preliminary business.
