[Press Telegraph Agency.] Napier, Friday. A seam of lignite coal, ten feet thick, of good quality, has been discovered in the FortyMile Bush by the General Government survey party. The spot is about three miles from AUardioe's store, towards the main road from the Euahiue ranges. It may prove to be a very valuable discovery. Grahamstows, Friday. The Borough Council voted a salary of £l5O to the Mayor last night. The Customs returns for the month amoimt to £975 7s. 4d. . The gold returns this month will approximate 12,000 ounces, the actual amount received by the Bank of New Zealand being 10,156 ounces, the three other Banks making up the total. New Plymouth, Friday. The inquiry into the wreck of the Paterson concluded yesterday. The Court handed back to the officers of the Paterson and Eliza and Mary their certificates, and intimated that judgment would be given on Thursday next. A second comet was visible at sunset last evening in a westerly direction, the tail being about two degrees in length. A rata tree, twenty-two feet in diameter, has been found near the road at the back of the mountain, about fourteen miles from town. Bluff, Friday. A survey has been held on the brig Carl. It is reported that 35 feet of her hull has been broken from the stem forward. The water flows out and in the hold. Considerable damage has been done to tho hull, and it is recommended that she should be sold for the benefit of all concerned.
