THE CHORAL SOCIETY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The letter appearing in this morning’s paper, signed “A Member,” contains suggestions and advice ■with which the majority, of the committee entirely agree, and endeavor as far as possible to carry out. As the meeting of the society is called for to-morrow evening, I propose, if you will allow me, to state the difficulties that exist and prevent the committee from carrying on the society. By being forewarned, members may come prepared with a remedy. The first and greatest difficulty la the dearth of competent soprano voices, both for solo and chorus. The committee are compelled to allow objectionable and incompetent voices to take part in the concerts in order to fill up. The remedy is in the hands of the members themselves. There are plenty of ladies in Wellington with good voices and musical knowledge, hut for some unexplained reason they will not assist the society. The next difficulty .is the conductor. The gentleman elected at the last annual meeting declines to act. The committee have failed to induce him to alter his decision, and cannot find in Wellington an equally competent musician for the office. No society of the kind can be carried on satisfactorily without a popular, talented, and firm conductor. From the above the members of the society will see that without trebles and without a conductor the committee were in difficulties, and considered decisive action in calling upon the members for more support or winding-up the society, the only course open.—l am, &c, f A Committeeman.
