As the Eliza Mary was entering the Waitara River yesterday, at high water, the wind suddenly changed, and, together with a heavy fresh in the river, caused her to go on to the South Spit, where she now lies. A fearful thunderstorm passed over the town last night. The steamer Paterson has shifted about two hundred yards towards the Waitara bar. Two anchors were let go, to prevent her from going to sea, and, but for these, she would have foundered. ' The p.s. Luna has arrived from Wellington with immigrants. Auckland, Wednesday. • Iron masters in South Wales have given notice of a further reduction in wages. The Plimsoll Commission is reported as deprecating further official survey of ships in favor of the preservation of the full responsibility of ship-owners, masters, and crews. A case of small-pox is reported at Newcastle, N.S.W. It is estimated that 1200 tons of wheat will be required before the next Victorian harvest. Breadstuffs are very dull in Melbourne. 4 p.m. William Bartley, barrister, a son of Mr. Bartley, a former Speaker of the Legislative Council, was found in an out-building of his residence, Woodside, with his brains blown out by a double-barred gun, which evidently had been inserted in his mouth. ■ It is supposed to have been the result of low spirits from expectation of another attack of asthma, under which he suffered greatly. Tadkanqa, Wednesday. There will be about twenty candidates for Tauranga Town Board honors. The election takes place on Saturday next. The Times urges the Provincial Government to grant a small • subsidy for a mail service between Tauranga and Katikati, as a stepping stone to a through overland service with the Thames.
