[Phess Telegkaph Agexct.] Auckland, Tuesday. Mr. McGill, who was reported to'have been drowned dining the late gale, has turned upi. He was driven across the harbor in a dingy, and managed to reach the north shore. The Government piropiose to withdraw the rating clauses in the Education Bill, and to substitute a uniform tax of a piouud, with a bachelor-tax of 10s., and a capitation of 10s. pier child attending school to the number of four belonging to one family. This is a temporary arrangement to defray the cost for the pircseut year. A new system, on the basis of property-tax, is to be introduced next year. Sailed —Phoebe, for the South ; Pretty Jane, for Napier; St. Hilda, for Wangaiwi. A fire at Newmarket destroyed four buildings. They included premises occupied by McNeil, baker, and owned by Wrigley, who was insured in tho South British for £250, and in the Norwich Union for £SO ; by Witherford, ironmonger, who had his stock insured for £2OO with the New Zealaud Company, and the building for £2OO in the South British, and £l5O iu the Now Zealand ; by Jenkins, draper, whoso stock was insured for £250 ; and by Morgan, whose building was insured for £2OO with the New Zealand office, and whose stock was insured for £260 with the Norwich Union. A quantity of goods was saved, but it was estimated that the insurance will not nearly cover the loss. The fire is believed to have originated in Withcrford's workshop. Mr Macfarlaue is a candidate for the representation of AVaitemata. Ddnedix, Tuesday. The Provincial balance sheet shows the estimated receipits to be £482,743, and the actual receipts £492,300, and the expenditure £404,066 for the financial year ending 31st March.
