It would bo well if gentlemen who attend the opera, but content themselves with lounging at the back of the dress circle, or piorforce remain there, would remember that the greater number of ladies and gentlemen who go there do so for the piurpiosc of hearing good music, and would infinitely prefer to hear the strains of the baud, or the voices of Miss May or Miss Lambert, to the idle talk which is too much indulged in. It annoys the listeners who have “ a touch of music in their souls," while the conversations would bo a good deal more in pilace on the side walk of the streets or at an accommodating bar, than in an opera-house during the rendering of a fine song, or the performance of a delicate accompaniment. This annoyance was felt considerably last night, and we hopio the hint will be taken. The Ecohabite Bazaar opened yesterday in the forenoon, and concluded in the evening with results which ought to bogratifying to the members of the order. The wreck of the Earl of Southesk was yesterday sold by auction at Thomas’s rooms, Mr. J. Martin being the purchaser at £B. Two boats belonging to the barque were also sold, one for £3, and the other for £3 10s. During the afternoon, Mr. Martin visited the wreck, which lies in deep water near Barrett’s reef, to ascertain as far as possible the value of the recoverable material. The inspection gave no encouraging hopes of the speculation turning out a very lucrative one, though it is impossible to say whether or not the operations of a diver may , not return a handsome profit upon Mr. Martin’s investment. The Hokitika papers report a case heard before the magistrate there, when a debtor was sued for forty shillings, the creditor agreeing to accept payment by instalments of one shilling weekly, to which the debtor (who must be a born humorist) demurred on account of the same being* more than he was able to pay. A very satisfactory meeting of the Bay of Islands Coal Company lias been held at Auckland, when the Chairman announced that the Directors were prepared to recommend that a dividend should be declared for the half-year, after the rate of 10 per cent, per annum. A gentleman of great experience had reported upon the company’s property, and since, he had been appointed manager, a pumping engine, to pump the lower levels of the mine, had been erected at a cost of £SOQI), and it was expected that all the water would be raised in a very few days after the meeting. The Government had elected not to press for the royalty of 25 percent. One,until the company should have tided over the financial difficulties through which it had to struggle ; and this consideration was acknowledged. "The Chairman said he believed that the dividend might be confidently calculated upon for a number of years to come.
