In Saturday’s Independent is an extract f the Southern Cross to the effect that Sir George Grey was burnt out of Govern 2 ment House he was permitted to draw Lu ging money to the amount of £4OO a year’ and immediately rented a house for £loq and pocketed the difference. This stat ment, it is hardly necessary to observe t incorrect in every particular. His Excel lency neither does nor did receive £4qq * year as an equivalent for house rent g-J paid considerably more than £lOO a year*at Auckland for house rent, facts which w suppose are tolerably well known both here and at Auckland, while the loss he sustain, ed by the fire at Auckland has never been replaced. It may almost be considered superfluous on our part to contradict au| statement made by the Southern Cross, since it is notorious how little reliance is ever placed in any of its assertions by any one except perhaps the editor of the Independent.
