MR D. S. MITCHELL DEAD
SYDNEY, July 25. Tho death is announced of Mr D. Mitchell, donor of the famous Mitchell Library, which is the most complete collection of Australian and Oceanic literature in existence, and is practically priceless A GENEROUS “WILL. SYDNEY, July 25. Under Mr Mitchell’s will, in addition to bequeathing his library to the State, £700,000 is left to endow it. A.si>ecial “Gazette” was issued to-day expressing regret at the death of one of the greatest benefactors in the State. Mr David Scott Mitchell, who presented the Mitchell Library to tlie Government of New South Wales, was born at Sydney in 1836. He was educated at Sydney Eniversity (where he won the Barker Scholarship in 1853-4), and became a barrister. He was patron of the New South Wales Historical Society, and a notable collector of coins, books, pictures, etc. Mr Mitchell was the possessor of one of the finest and most complete private libraries in Australia.
