Applications for the tenancy of the Government workmen’s homes at Petono closed at 4 p.m. yesterday. Only three applications in order were received. Inquiries are being made by several people, and by the time the houses, are ready for occupation (about the beginning of next month) it is anticipated that there will not be any difficulty about finding suitable tenants. It is thought that the failure of the Board to receive applications is on account of the houses being uncompleted and the conditions regarding the money deposit that must accompany all applications. The regulation in this regard reads as follows: —(a) In the case of a weekly tenancy the deposit shall consist of a sum equal t-o the first week’s rent of tin? highest-rented dwelling in the class for which he applies, together with the sum of £1 to be deposited by way of security, which sum shall upon the expiration or determination of the tenancy be returned to the tenant, less any amount then owing, either for rent or damages or otherwise, as the case may be. (b) t ln the case of a lease for fifty years, "the first month's rent of. the highest-rented dwelling in the class for which he applies, together with a 6iiin of £1 Is to defray the cost of the preparation and registration of the lease. ; Mr Harold W. Frost, who for eleven years was in practice at Napier, is. now in partnership with Mr J. W. Bridge, dentist of Wellington.
