GIRLIE GIRLIES.

FAIR AAIERICANS DOING THE OLD COUNTRY. “When in Rome, do as Rome does,” is an out-of-date apophthegm. Rather is it now “When Americans visit you, do as Americans do.” On this principle the usually fairly sedate “Morning Leader,” in its issue of Friday, July 27, prints headings as above, and writes American journalese as follows :—• The American Beaut —Or, rather, Hatty Feiretein, of Hopkinsville, Ivy., Anema Schwaningcr, 'of Jacksonville, Hid., Sad Cray, of Jeffersonville, ivy-, Birdie Kelly, of Lebanon, ivy., Virgy Kennady, of Owensboro, Ky., Aland Miller, of Elk ton, .Ky., Alary Lear, of Paint Lick, ivy., Myrtle Jenkins, of Louisville, Ky., Alary Aionsty, or New Albany, liul., and about twice as many more slick young and youngish trippers from America, struck England somewhere in the small hours of yesterday, and have been moving through our slow old country like lightning streaks ever since. THE NO.RTH-TO-SOUTH RUSH.

They will, strike the Pyramids somewhere about the end of Cowes week, and carry one cr two of them away as souvenirs, no doubt; but just now they are in London, resting after a rather full Thursday spent, mainly, in Edinburgh (where the ’Frisco maids tried to steal .the, bronze bust of Stephenson), and Birmingham, Warwick, Leamington, .and Stratford-on-Avon. Mont of the day was spent at Stratford. because if there is one tiling that .American Beaut , or —dam Ws on tour rn the Old Country love more than another, it is Stratford-on-Avon. Particularly at this time of the year, when the roses and the picture-postcards are in bloom. It was sweet indeed for the sbiid-waistod young hustlers from ivy., and Ind., and Ob. to wander by the lazy Avon and watch, in the summer shine, for one dear, famous figure whose prowess has made the world ring, and whose name will make Stratford live for ever. AIA RIE- 0 X -AVON.

But as this figure refused to appear on the Avon (Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays are her days off) Birdie and Sad and Hatty and Alyrtle and Virgy marched boldly to her house. Alas! the lattice was closed. The door wars locked. The oak was sported. Virgy peeped through the keyhole, Hatty scraped some paint from the railings. Nothing happened. So towards evening the ladies boarded the London express, and found themselves hot and tired and disappointed at Paddington by sunset. They all agreed that it was really too bad of Marie. .They guessed that she was going to be A dead cinch, anyway —smiling official welcome to her town of Stratford, and even slick and ready with her autOgraph. As she didn’t appear, some of the downhearted maids consoled themselves with Shakespeare. LONDON REVIEWED TO-DAY. They are viewing the whole of London to-day, with as much of the suburbs as they can cram in, after seeing the Tower, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, all the picture galleries, all the museums, the Monument, Nelson’s Column, each of the four lions, six (and if time allows, seven) of the Dials, Poplar, the Divorce Court, Buckingham Palace, and the American Embassy. They are living mainly on iced water and crackers.
