WAIPAWA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the Waipawa Football Club was held last Friday evening. The balance-sheet of the recent social was presented, and showed a credit balance of «£3 10© 3d. Votes of thanks were accorded as follows:— To Miss Ferguson for the donation of two line flags, and to Mr J. Craig for the gift of cap© for the senior members of the club. It was decided to hold a social to mark the close of the season for football on the 20th inst., and to invite Mr Paul Hunter, the donor of the shield, to be present on that occasion, and present it to the team for the twelve months' period ensuing. A football match will probably be played on the 13th inst. between teams picked from the senior© of the Waipukurau and Waipawa Clubs, and the Takapau and Ormondville Clubs. Heavy showers, alternating with semitropical heat, prevail most days just now, the former interfering with the sowing of the usual crops, and garden operations are also much retarded. At the Wellington Kennel Club’s Showon Wednesday, Mr H. Gebbie, of this town, scored first prize in both the greyhound dog puppy and bitch puppy classes with Nigger Prince and Jess respectively. Miss E. Whittington'© Windsor Floss won in the class for English setter bitch puppies Mr R. McCulloch ©cored three third prize© with Waipawa Chip, Waipawa Bruno and Waipawa Nora respectively. Mr H P. Beyers, of the Argyle (new settlement) has lost by fire, a Veil-ap-pointed and thoroughly up-to-date fowlhouse together with several valuable fowls,’and sittings of prize eggs; the loss i© estimated at between .£BO arid <£9o, and me origin of the fire ie unknown. A number of -native© from the Maori Pah have gone to Foxton to attend a big tangi.

Mr L. Terry, "the noted pedestrian, who is walking from the North Cape to Wellington, Passed through Waipawa on Tuesday last. His usual rate of speed permits him to cover 20 miles a day, • though on some occasions he has walked 33 miles in that period of time. ~ There was a goodly array of offenders against the Town bye-law forbidding the firing of chimneys, on Tuesday morning last, and .fines were inflicted which varied • from ,7 s6 d to 15s. Mr Murray presided, and the question before the meeting was discussed, andT’ favourably commented on by them, and the following resolution carried unanimously: —This meeting, called together by public notice, duly advertised, hereby agrees to hand over to the Waipawa Town Board free of charge, all the property of the Waipawa Public Library, such property to be vested exclusively in the town Board, library subscriber® to have representation in the administration of the affairs of the library, such representation; to consist of not less than onethird in number of any committee that may be set - up by the Town Board,, for the management of the affairs of the Hbrary. That the Chairman and Secretary be empowered to act o-n behalf of the subscribers in handing over the proBerty in a legal manner to the Town oard, and to sign and enter into an agreement with the Town Board under uie conditions named.” Messrs Hubert Burnett, of Woodville, and C. M. .Whittington, proprietor of the € ‘ VV aipawa Mail," have been nominated for the vacant seat on the Hawke's Bay Education Board, caused by the decease of Mr Samuel Johnson, and the election will be held on the 25th i-mst.
