The Imperial Hotel was the scene of a very pleasant reunion oi railway men last Saturday night, tlie occasion was further enhanced .by the circumstance of a presentation made to Mr Harry S'loan, of the VV aipavviv-Kaikora section, who has been transferred and promoted to a position in the Newmarket shops, Auckland. Mr Graham, stationmaster at Kaikora, occupied the chair, and on behalf of the company, presented to Mr Sloan a smoker’s outfit. Mr Graham conveyed the general regret at Mr Sloan’s departure, and congratulations upon hie promotion, and said a great many nice things concerning Mr Sloan’s outstanding good qualities ae a railway man. Messre Brookes and McRae endorsed the Chairman’s remarks, and Mr Sloan suitably replied. At St. Peter’s Churcn last Sunday morning, the rite of confirmation was administered by the Bishop of Waipawa to six male candidates and eight female candidates presented by the Vicar of the parish, the Rev. H. P. Cowx, M.A. Previous to the laying on of hands, the Bishop addressed the candidates upon personal responsibilities of moral life, and the blessings attendant upon the spiritual life. At evening prayer the Bishop occupied the pulpit and delivered an impressive sermon to the young members of the congregation. There were immense congregations at both services. A sale of work, in aid of foreign missions, will be held shortly. During the past few weeks sewing meetings have been held, at which articles for use and adornment have been made, and generous additions to these are being given bv friends. Mrs E. H. Taylor and Mies Rath bone are organiser and treasurer respectively. Lindsay (new settlement) has advanced a step towards the conveniences of the age the following has been received by Mr’c. Hall, M BLR.:—"It has been decided to open the desired telephone office at Ruataimoha, on the Lindsay estate, on condition that private accommodation for the telephone be provided to the satisfaction of the Department, and that a suitable person be nominated to act ae telegraphist for a salary on a basis of 2d per message, with a minimum of JgQ per annum. —-(Signed) J. G. Ward. Postmaster-General." At a meeting of the Committee of the Waipawa Building Society yesterday, it was resolved to forward a letter of condolence to the widow of the late Mr Samuel Johnson, who had occupied the position of Chairman for many years. M_r W. D. Pattison was elected Chairman, and Dr Godfrey was elected to fill the vacancy on the Committee. The local football club are very jubilant, as they have now won the Hunter Shield twice in succession during the whole time it has been under competition,, and without a defeat. A match was set down for Wednesday, the 23rd inst., between Ormondville and but the Secretary of the former clnb having notified that they are unable to play, Waipawa has won the match by forfeit—-the remaining match in the 1965 competition, Waipukurau v. Takapan cannot affect the result which ever way it. goes. The jivrnors have a match impending for the Coney’s Cup, to be played with Onga Onga on the 36tli inst., and they are leading for the trophy. A meeting of the Library Committee was held last. Wednesday evening, when Mr M. Murray was elected Chairman to fill the vacancy caused by the decease of Mr Samuel Johnson. The Secretary intimated that a sum of J 25. being the net proceeds of the Choral Society 6 concert recently held, was now available for the funds of the Library. It was decided to record and forward to the society a vote of thanks for their timely financial assistance. Mr H. M. Rathbone was elected a member of the Committee, and the Secretary was asked to forward a letter of condolence to the widow and family of the late Mr Samuel Johnson, for many years President of „ the institution. , The annual meeting of the Waipaw' Racing Club was held in *>» Empire Ho-

tel last Wednesday evening. Mr W. H. Rathbone presided, and there was a good, attendance. The balance-sheet, which, showed that last year’s working had resulted in a considerable profit, wai adopted. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr T. Butler; Vice-Pre-sident, Mr John Harker; Hon. Treasurer, Mr A. E. Jull; Committee, Messrs J. Petit, W. H. Rathbone, C. Tricklebank, S. McGreevy, jun., J. Craig, C. H. Nash, H P. Beyers, T. W. Wills, and C. M. Whittington; Hon. Auditor, Mr M. Murray. Messrs. A. W. Sherman, A. TTuill, and H. Carlyon were elected members of Committee. The tender of Messrs Cohen and Co. was accepted for working the totalisator. The.following officers were appointed : —Handicapper, Mr J. E. Henrys; Hon. Judge. Mr S. McGreevy, jun.; Hon. Starter, Mr Paul Hunter; Clerk of the Course, Mr R. McGreevy; Hon. Clerk of Scales, Mr W. H. Rathbone: Hon. Clerk of the totalisator, Mr M. Murray ; Hon. Timekeeper, Mr H. M. Rathbone; Programme Committee, Messrs Rathbone, McGreevy, and Whittington; Ground Committee, Messrs Butler, McGreevy, Tricklebank, Craig, and Whittington. It waa decided to effect further improvement to the course, and vote© of thanks were accorded to the hon. officials of the year for their services.

The Waipawa agency of the State Fire Insurance has been offered to Mr L. Pratley; the late Mr S. Johnson held the position at the time of his decease.
