WOODVILLE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Woodville is steadily showing signs of progress and consequent prosperity. The Borough Council is talcing a poll of ratepayers with regard to a loan for lighting the town with gas. There is little doubt that the proposal will be carried. There is not a single house available for letting purposes within the borough. The Council has resolved upon making a handsome addition to the present Library building, which will be used as a reading-room. The lady subscribers intend holding a poster ball on September 27 in order to raise funds to assist in furnishing the new room. Most of the local firms and some outside have already signified their intention of being represented. Gentlemen will appear in ordinary dress Mr W. F. Ross’s second assembly was held in the Foresters’ Hall on Friday last, and was a great success. The third and last is being eagerly looked forward to by our young folks.
Very great sorrow was felt here at the news of the death of Mr Samuel Johnson. As Almoner to the Charitable Aid Board for several years, his genial kind-heartedness made him ever welcome in the homes of the poor. His work on the Education Board was of very great value to this end of the district, and his death leaves a void hard to fillMr Burnett (Mayor) will he a candidate for the vacancy on the Education Board, and if elected will prove a worthy successor to Mr Johnson. The Education Department has decided to close the secondary classes in connection with the District High School, which is a matter for regret. The Crown Dairy Company are erecting new and handsome premises in McLean &tr6Bt Mr Gothard’s fine new residence in Ferguson street is completed, and is a handsome addition to the town. _ , The members of the football club hold their annual social for Friday week, which promises to be a great success. The Fire Brigade social takes place on September 13th, and is sure to be well P MrS d Mra Whittington, of the Bank of New Zealand, will entertain the Ruahine Battalion Band and lady friends on the 30th of this month. . Mr Somerville has disposed or his coaching plant to his son and Mr Thom, late of the Police Force. All ]om in wishing the now firm every success.
